Bill Tuckfield is an automotive industry professional, managing monthly retail projects within data-driven spaces. Currently introducing a new mode of internal operating to provide advertising opportunities for the broader public, Bill is highly familiar with the challenges of navigating people and data in an online world.

It should come as no surprise, then, that he seeks a future-focused mindset in an account manager; with qualities like initiative, curiosity, a solutions-oriented mentality and interpersonal skills, relationship-building is evidently critical. Bill explains that along with burnout, maintaining these relationships have become a major challenge in the online environment:

“It’s a little easier to stay friendly and recent with internal stakeholders.  Calls and video occur naturally, and the mood is generally more casual.  This is much more difficult with clients.  It’s more important than ever that clients know we have their best interest in mind and anytime there is a degradation to face time that becomes more challenging.”

When asked what strategies he personally employs to circumvent these challenges with clients, Bill cited honesty and integrity as core values, explaining, “I think many business leaders get caught up in short term gains instead of nurturing long-term growth.”

To ensure connections are sustained when processing data-heavy information, Bill cites PowerPoint (not Excel) as a key tool; “what people are really looking for is insights… start with what you see the data telling you and support the finding.” By following this visual-focused approach, data becomes more tangible and results-driven, without getting lost in a spreadsheet.

Bill has witnessed a massive shift in the automotive arena, but he sees automotive as more than a car industry; “an auto company is no longer an auto company.  It’s a data science company, a tech company and a dozen others.” With industry newcomers like Tesla catalyzing tech’s influence, it is no wonder that exciting visuals and tangible possibilities are propelling discourse of a tech/auto future.
